No longer able to scan to file
When I had ubuntu 18.04 I had a Scan icon in my favourites which opened a control screen. I forget what it was called, but this screen showed me what I had scanned and had a few basic settings for text or image quality , orientation, page number rearrangement, and the option to save it to a file. After I upgraded to ubuntu 20.04, the scan screen could not connect to the printer, even though it is connected with USB cable, and when I uninstalled and reinstalled HPLIP the icon disappeared completely. The scanner still works but I have no way to save a scanned document or image. The printer function still works OK. The printer is a fairly new HP Envy 5032. The printer check is as follows, but I am not a computer geek and I don't understand any of it:
hp-check -t

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Not knowing the name of the application you scanned with is a
drawback. Could it have been xsane?

How do you know it still works?

Hey Brian, and thanks for the reply.
As I say, I'm not a tech geek so I hope my answers are at least in the ball
park.
I thought the printer app was called HPLIP, which apparently comes standard
with ubuntu. That's why I posted this question on an HP forum.
However I realise there may be sub-types I wouldn't know, and the name
"xsane" you mentioned does crop up in the printer 'check log" I added
above, as requested. None of it means anything to me, but there's a bit
that says:
"error: xsane xsane - Graphical scanner frontend for SANE
OPTIONAL 0.9 - MISSING 'xsane
needs to be installed'
Also possibly significant are:
"warning: ubuntu-20.04 version is not supported. Using ubuntu-19.10
versions dependencies to verify and install... " and:
"warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or
hpfax: CUPS backend for HP-Devices."
I know the scanner still works because I can still use the printer as a
photocopier, and I can hear the scan screen operating when I do.
I'm at a bit of a loss; I have a lot of paper files to copy to computer,
and at this stage wondering if it's possible to downgrade back to ubuntu
18.04, or take it back to the store and reinstall Windows - which is
gonna cost me another couple hundred dollars.
Cheers, Rick

Hi ,
You can install 3.21.2 drive rpackage with ubuntu 20.04 support.
Also scan will not work via USB in ubuntu 20.04 onwards due to ippusbxd process running on it. It is issue from Ubuntu.
You can try to scan via network after installing the plugin file
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Richard Steele for more information if necessary.
