Are "minor" product numbers always inluded in the major product number driver?

Hi

Someone posted a question here on launchpad regarding the HP Smart Tank 555 printer. It seems he finally was able to connect it successfully (via USB and WIfi) although the "Supported Printer"-Page only lists the Smart Tank 550 (see https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/692058)

So was he just lucky or should it always work if only the last digit changes in the product number?

Personally I would be interested in the HP Smart Tank 655
