How do I get the newest versions of both Ubuntu & hplip to "talk" to an older HP printer?

Asked by Kathryn Peterson

I have just acquired a new Linux laptop running the latest version of Ubuntu (20.x.x) & hplip. How do I 1) actually get the hplip to run on the machine, & 2) communicate with an HP Officejet Pro 9010? The machine "sees" the printer, but doesn't communicate to print. Help!

I wouldn't bother with HPLIP. See

I'm sorry, relative neophyte in command-line stuff here, someone's going to have to walk me through the steps in the terminal or wherever to install this. Thanks.
