Are printer drivers good for printers in a series?

Asked by Peter Brandon

I'm considering buying a printer / scanner and use Ubuntu 20.04. I'm just looking at HP printers because they seem to be more compatible with linux.

Unfortunately, every printer of interest I've found is not listed in either your supported or unsupported lists. What I do notice is that your supported lists indicates that you have support for an HP printer that seems to be in the same series as the one I'm considering. So, for example, I'm looking at HP OfficeJet Pro 8028. Your supported list has HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 and HP OfficeJet Pro 8030, just not 8028.

Is it likely that if the printer in which I'm interested is in the same series as one you support that it also is supported?

Almost any printer that has come on the market in the past five years will work
with Linux without the need for vendor software. See

The 8028 fits the criterion above.
