Scanner not working in colors

Asked by Alexander on 2020-09-25

Hello,

my Printer: HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w.
OS: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
Kernel: x86_64 Linux 5.4.0-48-generic

The printer is connected via WiFi and it used to work fine.
Now when I am scanning in greyscale via hp-scan, everything is working fine.

If I scan in color I am getting the following output:
hp-scan -m color

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to
successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies
installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Problems with the LaserJet Pro MFP M28w and scanning are not entirely
unknown. Download and install sane-airscan from

  https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan

How's that?

Cheers,

Brian.

Alexander (cluster2a) said : #2

It's working with sane-airscan - thanks alot!

But what is the problem? WIll further drivers be fixed?

Alexander (cluster2a) said : #3

Ah it is working with airscan as long as I scan 150 dpi. If I scan 600 dpi the same error occurs.

I used the original source and switched to 150 dpi and its also working.. so It's kind of related to the dpi.

As I implied, this device has given all sorts of trouble with scanning in the
past. As far as sane-airscan is concerned, Alex Pevzner is very responsive.
You could open an issue there, referring to this thread.

That is is an issue for upstream HPLIP. They have been silent on the matter
when other bugs have been raised.

Cheers,

Brian.

Someone was faster: https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan/issues/38

Turning off ESCL helped for me. Via WSD I am able to scan a 600dpi color picture.

Cant believe that takes that much care of their drivers :(

Thanks for you help, brian!
