wish to update firmware on HP LaserJet Pro M402dn

Asked by John Sauter

I saw the notice on the HP web site that there is a security problem with old versions of the firmware for the LP LaserJet Pro M402dn. Using the front panel of the printer I found that the firmware date code on my printer is 20160218C, so it needs to be updated. Again using the front panel I attempted to update the firmware, but it gives the message "no update found". I tried to download firmware update software for my PC from the HP web site, but there is no firmware update software for GNU/Linux. I downloaded the Windows 10 64-bit .exe file, but it does not appear to be an archive, so I was unable to extract a firmware file from it.

I contacted HP support. The chat feature said they do not support GNU/Linux and recommended that I call the voice number. When I did I learned that the firmware download feature built in to the HP LaserJet Pro M402dn is not functional, and they have no other way to update firmware unless I purchase a Windows computer or a newer printer.

I was also told to try asking for a solution on this support forum, so I am asking. Is there a way to update the firmware on my printer?

Hi,

Take a look here : https://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/pfirmware/pfirmware.glf

Find the firmware file for your printer and upload-it on your printer by FTP (with filezilla, etc...).

The printer will update automatically just after the upload.

Thank you for this information. I downloaded the update file using wget and the URL listed for my printer. I then sent the update file to my printer using lp. As you predicted, the printer updated its firmware and rebooted. After the update the printer is working fine.
