HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg not found?

Asked by Steffen Sledz

Why does hp-setup did not find my HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg (while the HP ENVY 5330 is detected well)? Despite "manual discovery" it reports:

HPLIP cannot detect printers in your network.
This may be due to existing firewall settings blocking the required ports. When you are in a trusted network environment, you may open the ports for network services like mdns and slp in the firewall. For detailed steps follow the link. http://hplipopensource.com/node/374

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

The mentioned bug does not really fit my problem. It seems to describe a scanner detection problem only.

It only seems like that to you. You surely read

  https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSPrintQueues#hpuld ?

> Why does hp-setup did not find my HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg?

Because it is not supported by HPLIP.

How do you go on now with printing?

According to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index HPLIP fully supports "HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M178n" since version 3.18.5.

So "MFP M178n" does not include "MFP 178nwg"?

The support you reference is for an HP Color LaserJet Pro. You have
an HP Color Laser. See the difference?
