1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.

supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi,

From your output , it seems that you have been using old version of HPLIP.

Please use latest HPLIP 3.20.5 from the HPLIP portal. That should solve your problem.

Thank you for the reply, but as I titled the question, I can’t install the latest version. I have downloaded HPLIP-3.20.5 four times from 2 mirror sites, but the install stops and says invalid characters. I have tried repeatedly to open the installation instructions but every time I try the link I get a “requested page can’t be found.” error.
Does anyone have the instructions? If so, can you post them?

Please provide the full output that you receive when trying to install the latest HPLIP version with the command

sh hplip-3.20.5.run

Hello OldPete,

If you are dead set on debugging hplip I'm afraid I have nothing to offer
in pursuit of that task. However, if getting printing going on Mint 19.x is
your major concern, I think we can sort something out quite quickly.

However, it does involve changing the USB connections to network ones.
After doing that, the outputs of

  avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

and

  avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp

would be needed.

Cheers,

Brian.

Thank you Manfred!
I’ll try that Saturday afternoon, and post the results.

Brian,
I should have mentioned that I’m in Michigan and my 84 year old mother is in Florida. I remote in to try to help, but she has no spare cables and not much patience with troubleshooting over the phone. I appreciate your taking the time to post! I have no desire to debug HPLIP, but for some reason, ever time I downloaded it. Linux opened a window and loaded it into a text editor. Thank you again!

The last sentence is what I expected. You are not supposed to open that file with a text editor (e.g. by double-clicking on it), but you have to open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and then issue the command

sh hplip-3.20.5.run

If this tells that it cannot file the file, then you have to change directory first, probably

cd Downloads
sh hplip-3.20.5.run

Hello Manfred!

Thank you! I ran it as you mentioned and it completed successfully?
when I ran the hp-check -t command, it still showed 17, not 20. I changed the repository settings and tried again. This time the installer asked to remove 17 as it could interfere with 20 installing. removed it and I think it worked. It's waiting for plugging the USB back in! Tomorrow - Mom's asleep.

You're amazing! Thank you!
