Segmentation fault with HP-Toolbox

Asked by Lusule

I am running Gentoo, updated as at 27/04/09
My printer is an HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one
The output of hp-check -t can be seen here: http://lusule.pastebin.com/f62bca819

I am using the x86 gentoo system, not the ~x86 system. I have installed hplip with the flags: cupsddk, dbus, fax, ppds, qt3, scanner, snmp, -doc, -minimal, -parport, qt4. The x86 version seems to be hplip 2.8.6b, with 3.9.2 masked for ~x86.

I do not have parallel ports enabled in my kernel, as I never use them. My printer is connected through the wireless network.

Setup seems able to locate my printer with no problems, and I seem to be able to print just fine - so long as I don't want to make any changes to the default printer settings. Clicking on the printer properties option in most programs either does nothing at all, or gives me a window with most options, such as duplex, papertype, etc, greyed out.

Trying to run hp-toolbox from the command line gives me the gui with the status tab open, but when I try to switch to the 'print settings' tab, the window closes and the command line displays 'segmentation fault' and returns to the prompt. This leaves the system tray icon open on the taskbar, but it doesn't do anything useful.

Trying to run hp-toolbox again displays the hp-toolbox.lock error, and ps aux | grep hp shows that hp-toolbox is still running, uselessly. I've been having to kill it with kill -9.

I've been having problems with hp-toolbox for a while, when trying to run it directly, but I've been able to get around that by using the cups webpage. Being unable to modify printer properties from within other programs, such as acroread, gimp and abiword, is new since I updated yesterday.

At one point, I was able to generate this error by clicking on the system tray icon: http://lusule.pastebin.com/d7a6a99bd
I traced this to dbus-python package, and reinstalled it. I haven't been able to recreate the error since, but it hasn't solved my toolbox problems.

Have you got any tips on how I could fix this? Thanks.
