hp-systray not showing in panel

Asked by Frank

Hi -

I recently upgraded from Mint 19.1 to 19.3 and, although I added "hp-systray -x" in Startup Applications, it does not show up in the panel.

If I run it from the command line, it says it's already running, but I see nothing.

Has something changed? I've set up my OfficeJet 6700 and other printers this way for many versions. OR does this only work if I set up using USB (newer Mint versions "find" the WiFi printers without needing to ever connect them physically).

Printing and scanning work just fine, but I like having the systray app in the panel so I can look at ink levels and such.

I hope my hp-systray app isn't just practicing social distancing ...

Thanks for any pointers.

Additional Info on my question:
HPLIP version is 3.17.10
Python version is 2.7.17

Running the hp-check -r command says things like:
'CUPS may not be installed or not running'
'DBUS may not be installed or not running'
Neither of these is true; both are installed and running just fine as far as I can tell.

The output also suggests that various SANE libraries are missing, but I can scan from my 6700 just fine.

Is the older (default) version 2.7.17 of Python the issue?? According to Synaptic, python3 (3.6.7-1~18.04) and various libpython3 libraries are installed but, not being a python user, I can't tell if everything required is installed.
