Hp Printer - Seen as printer but not scanner

Asked by Dan on 2020-05-04

I purchased a new Laser Jet pro MPF 148fdw specifically because HP is supposed to be Linux friendly. I loaded the driver (https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip) Ubuntu 18.04 sees the printer as wireless and can print. It also recognizes it as a fax but not a scanner. Simple Scan can see it but can not scan. (scan works fine on two windows systems) I see some bug reports on line that I do not understand. Probing with my system I several errors that imply the plug in is not loaded, yet it prints. See below. Any ideas on this?

See https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1876607 for an
alternative SANE backend to use.

That did not seem to work but after a reboot it was all connected. Is there a way to remove the HP LIP software? I see nothing in Ubuntu's software feature.

Thanks brian_p, that solved my question.

Are you saying that sane-airscan definitely works for scanning with your 148fdw?

To remove HPLIP I would do

  sudo apt purge hplip

in a terminal.

Yes, it definitely works.

It was just kind of odd how it worked. I loaded the program and the dependencies. I then tried to load the printer but could not find it. (There were some options so maybe I did not choose correctly.) I rebooted and it was already loaded.
