Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed
to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

3) Additional information:
a) I've used the packages provided by my distribution. I'v also had to add my user account to the lpadmin group to get it to actually be able to install the printer (hplip error messages mostly useless).
b) I can print from CUPS, but the hp-toolbox always shows my printer as "Busy" unless I power-off and then power on, which it shows status as "Warming" up until the printer is ready and then it shows "Busy"
c) hp-plugin was installed successfully
d) pjd130@spark2:~$ scanimage
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_Professional_M1212nf_MFP?ip=192.168.0.2 failed: Error during device I/O
e) All scanning applications give pretty much the same error
f) Cannot print a test page either using hp-toolbox to print the test page gives me the following output:
