Set up of a HP Envy5546 printer via Linux OS. Installed HPLIP toolbox, PPD file is not found. Have run a check in terminal. Can provide output if needed.

Asked by Clare

In HP Device Manager Setup pop up, Am getting the message that the PPD file is not found, and to click browse button to select a PPD file. I do this and 4 PPD files are shown, yet whichever one I click, nothing happens. However, there are files for each of the 4 PPD's, they haven't been unpacked.
When accessing my file manager, I looked in /etc/cups/ppd I found a file for the printer, but it had an 'X' over it and no known files associated with it.
Also, checking /user/share/cups file, there's two text documents:- /usr/share/cups/cupsd.conf.default and /usr/share/cups/cups-files.conf.default and a file ppd-updaters.

I'm a Linux beginner, but after running a command to check status in Terminal, received this output
" cups.service - CUPS Scheduler
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; enabled; vendor preset: ena
Active: failed (Result: start-limit-hit) since Sat 2020-04-04 14:50:16 BST; 6
Docs: man:cupsd(8)
Process: 5832 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/cupsd -l (code=killed, signal=TERM)
Main PID: 5832 (code=killed, signal=TERM)"

Also, cannot connect to server, which may be linked to above problem.
I THINK this may be a problem with not being sure which of the 4 PPD files to unpack, and where best to unpack it to as there are more than one folders containing HP texts. Even /etc/cups/ppd/ENVY-5540-series.ppd the text editable documen there is covered by a large 'X' and when right clicked, 'has no known programme associated with it.'

Hello Clare,

Is the device connected to the network? If not, make it so and give the
outputs of these three commands:

  avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

  avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp

  driverless

Hello Brian

Thanks for the speedy reply.
Have tried the above commands, however, cannot connect to printer server, and still receiving message

error: No PPD found for model envy_5540 using old algorithm.
error: No appropriate print PPD file found for model envy_5540_series

However, are PPD files added, but when choose one to open, no response.

CUPS is installed, but not running. Tried a reinstall of this and HPLIP, still nothing.

Hello Clare,

You did not say whether the printer itself is connected to the network. Most
users do this via wireless. You can check for a network connection from the
printer's control panel.

CUPS has to be running. Do 'sudo systemctl restart cups' and check with
'systemctl status cups. Then try the commands I gave you.

Brian.
