check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation

This is a workaround which I found in some forums of Arch linux
1. Copy model.dat from hplip 3.18.xx to 3.20.xx and it will work for hp-setup to find the printer and the scanner..
However, it still willproduce I/O error when trying to scan.

2. Re installe the hplip-plugin after the above mentioned copy of the model.dat from the hplip 3.18 and the xsane will see the scanner and scans well
So I think it is a depreciation problem for the old MFP's from Hplip because this solution I found for different model but the result is the same!!
I am marking this as solved but I think it should be fixed!!
