hp-toolbox problems on new JJ install

Asked by Chico de la Guerra

I have a similar problem to the one David had.

I installed JJ (9.04) last night. During that install I was asked if I'd like to replace my hplip (files or configuration or something) or keep that from 8.10 and I choose to keep it (I was asked two questions about replacing something with hplip and declined in both cases)

The hplip icon no longer appears (as it did in 8.10) as a panel icon nor as a system-tray box on the lower toolbox.

The printers work fine however.

On System>preferences>hpliptoolbox I see the icon. When I right click, I can place the launcher on either panel or desktop, no problem, however it has no effect when clicked (in 8.10 it brought up the interactive GUI menu).

hplip-gui is installed.

I cut to the chase, and started attempting to run /usr/bin/hp-toolbox directly.

I received the error message that qt3 support was missing, and installed it repeatedly with aptitude or apt-get and probably synaptic too (not all at once, at different times)

Once it installed, I received a different error message, namely, "unable to lock . . . (you will see the rest below) . . . "

Taking a cue from Aaron, I rm'd the toolbox lock in /home/chico/.hplip/hp-toolbox.lock

However there appears to be some sort of error loop. Relevant command line output below:

chico@chico-laptop:~$ ls .hplip/
hplip.conf hp-toolbox.lock
chico@chico-laptop:~$ rm .hplip/hp-toolbox.lock
chico@chico-laptop:~$ hp-toolbox

there thus seems to be a loop -- one solution brings back the other, and vice versa

I suspect I should have just loaded the new hplip code with JJ last night

but will await any insights you gentlemen may have . . . .

thanks in advance -- Chico

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Aaron, I noticed the plug-in error for the p1006, and ran $sudo hp-plugin

the LJ1020 is in another building and not accessible this evening (but it probably has the same issues)

neither of them print any longer, although they both take print commands (gui or manually) say they are printing, don't print, and then both report the print jobs are completed

+++++++++++

$ sudo hp-plugin

problem was resolved by completely removing hplip (including config files) and reinstalling with synaptic

use your local user to run hp-toolbox and root to run hp-plugin, it all works well

the LJ1020 now works correctly, the P1006 will be set up later

Thanks all
