Xsane opened from HP Device Manager "Cannot read contents of..." any folder other than Home. Permission Error

Asked by Chad Wright

First, I have done several searches of this issue over the past few years, and have never found even a remotely close solution.

When opening Xsane via the Hp Device Manager on Ubuntu 19.04, (as well as previous versions), there is a permissions issue. If I start a scan from the HP Device Manager, I am only able to save scans to folders within my Home folder. If I try to save to any other folder, even folders owned by my user, I get this error:

"Could not read the contents of [Folder Name]
Error opening directory '/path/to/folder/': permission denied"

If I open Xsane out side of the HP interface, I do not have the permissions issue, and I can read/write to any folder.

Is HPLIP using a different user account? Where do I begin sorting out the permissions?

Hi ,
Can you change the permission of the file name and try again:

$sudo chmod 777 file_name

I know how to change permissions of a file, but my issue is that I cannot save a file from within the HP Device manager GUI.
