Does HP CLJ Pro MFP M181fw with hplip 3.19.8 ? Hplip does not show up on drivers after install.

Asked by Mike Polioudakis on 2019-09-29

Yesterday (2019 09 28) bought new HP Color LJPro MFP M181fw. Can provide serial number if needed.

Tried to install HP LJPro MFP M181fw in Ubuntu 18.04, on two laptops, see below.

HP LJPro MFP 177fw appears on original 18.04 drivers' list with driver as HPLIP 3.17.10, but says proprietary add-on required (don't know what).

After install 3.19.8, it does not appear on drivers' list. Cannot select it as driver. Tried purging HPLIP before install, same results.

Printer appears as generic CUPS printer. Cannot find URI to specify printer better. Cannot link URI to driver. Don't know for sure what a PPD file is so I can't link up to driver as PPD file.

Have followed HP help as best I can. For example, see page about HPLIP auto installer walk thru with 14 steps: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/install/install/index

My work seems to go as illustrated in help literature but still no results.

When I went to HP site to search for driver for this specific printer, I got 3.19.8 If this printer does not have a driver and-or this printer cannot be run under Ubuntu, please somebody say so to me straight out.

If I need software in addition to download from HP site, please tell me what and where.

Tried it on Toshiba Satellite and Dell Latitude, both 10 years old or less. Both previously recognized HP printer Laser Personal 4 (very old) and HP Color Laser 3600, both laptops running Ubuntu 18.04, both connected to Net thru wireless.

Should be able to install HPLIP 3.19.8, see it on list of drivers, find URI for printer, and link printer to driver. Then it should all work well, including scanner.

I am OK with computers but not great. 70 years old and need clear instructions. Really need help here as I can't afford this if it doesn't work and I can't take it back. Don't know what else to say. Help appreciated.
