On step 9 of installing HPLIP, Using Ubuntu 8.10

(Is the CD-ROM/DVD source repository enabled? Are your repositories configured correctly?

Make sure CD is disabled and that the repos are up.

sudo apt-get update

etc.

The repos have been taking a hit from the lastest release of Ubuntu and may be slow to respond. You may need to wait a day or so until everyone gets upgraded and try again--or keep trying, etc.
