hp-setup crashes on a particular printer only

Asked by Alastair Budge-Reid on 2019-09-19

Running openSUSE Tumbleweed and trying to use hp-setup and hpaio to install Color Laserjet 2840 all-in-one. My normal setup uses lan connection as printer is used by several printers.

This printer has worked since new with manual install and Scanlite has also worked with limited features, but I cannot install using hp-setup. Following upgrade some time ago (possibly even before Tumbleweed,) I have no longer been able to scan as scanner is not detected.

I have changed connection to USB but still I have the problem. I have run hp-doctor and sorted out all dependencies so all is shown OK. The printer firmware is dated the same as the current available firmware download. My OS is up to date and I do not have this problem with any other printer.

When I try and run hp-setup I get a python crash warning which does not offer any debugging help. I have used every installation method at my disposal and even if I use the manual installation of the printer I cannot get hpaio to run as for this I must use hp-setup which crashes.

The hplip version from the Tumbleweed repo is 3.19.6-2.1. In desperation I have even tried using the rather impressive auto installer for the latest verion of hp 3.19.8. Unfortunately there are installation conflicts with Yast but the newer hp-setup does run and does not crash but cannot complete the print queue installation. I seek further advice here as, after five pages of efforts with openSUSE forum, we have hit a dead end.

Grateful for any help possible please.

This question is still open. Does anybody know how I can fix this. The printer is working but the scanner no longer works. Problems started with hplip updates so somebody should be able to help but at present hp-setup does not run to completion.

Hi,

Can you please post the output of hp-setup crash here.?
And output of hp-check -t also.

Hi Shivani,
Since I posted my problem there have been a few system updates and I was able to obtain a newer version of hplip. The result of this is that there is no longer a python crash and hp-setup now runs but fails. Here are the results of the two command you suggested:-

alastair@install:~> hp-setup

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or
.run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an
already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both
compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

I am not a coder so cannot contribute much more but please let me know if there is anything else I can do?

Many thanks,
Regards,
Alastair.

Hi Shivani,
I gave the info you asked for but I am not sure if you are still working on this. Please can you let me know if you need any more information.

I am not a coder but suspect the problem is that the firmware for this computer is flawed and designed for only 32 bit applications. I would very much appreciate your help to get my printer and scanner working again.
Regards,
Alastair
