Cannot setup scan on HP Officejet Pro 6968

I have the printer setup successfully on Linux Mint 18.3. When I try to scan a document Simple Scan say additional software needed. I click the Install Drivers button and it reports "You appear to have an HP scanner. Installing driver. for a few seconds then changes to "Failed to install drivers." The result is I cannot scan.

Hi,

HP Officejet Pro 6968 is not supported by HPLIP. Hence you are seeing this behavior.

Can you help with this problem?
