I cannot set up printer/scanner

Asked by David Fleetwood

Operating System Linux Mint 19.2
Printer HP Laserjet Pro MFP M277dw

The software has located the printer on my network using manual find with the fixed IP address for the printer. When I select Next, I get a message that "setup requires a binary plugin" and it asks me to visit this site for more information, but I cannot find a solution.
I have run the hp-check utility and have a log file if it will help. All the messages look OK to me until the end when it includes:

Every attempt to follow the advice on line for the installation of the binary plugin resulted in the same error that "setup requires a binary plugin". After many, many attempts, I checked and found that image scanning has now started working despite the error and printing (that was already working) remains operational. The outcome is satisfactory, but far from ideal.
