hplip cups/linux driver for old HP PS LaserJets -- extremely slow if using PS ppd; ok if PCL ?

Asked by pgnd on 2019-07-29

I run OpenSUSE Leap,

 lsb_release -rd
  Description: openSUSE Leap 15.1
  Release: 15.1

I've got a number of old/trusty HP LaserJets on the LAN, e.g. HP LJ 4050n, mounted as a JetDirect (socket:// ) devices.

Desktop has installed,

 cups-config --version

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.19.6)
  Device Information Utility ver. 5.2

Available drivers are

 ls -1 /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-laserjet_4050*

 rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-laserjet_4050*

I've added CUPS configs for 2 printer instances -- 1 using the PCL driver, the other the PS, which is "recommended" in setup.

CUPS printer config is,

 cat /etc/cups/printers.conf
  # Printer configuration file for CUPS v2.3.0

In use, both print -- mostly.

The PCL instance prints with little to no delay -- whether a simple/small TXT file, or a graphics-heavy website page.

OTOH, the PS instance suffers significant dealays. Simple TXT files will take ~ 30sec to a minute. Graphics-heavy jobs take 2-5 minutes, per output page.

Afaict, there are no errors -- nothing I can find, so far, in logs. The jobs do print -- eventually.

Changing the pdftops-renderer from pdftops -> gs has noticeable effect.

I understand there's an PS rendering step involved, but I don't think these are reasonable delays. Something else is amiss.

Question is -- what? I'm not clear on what/where to start troubleshooting this.
