Proprietary hp-plugin required for scanning even though device listed as fully supported by hplip

Asked by Black Panther

Hello,

so I'm very disappointed that my newly bought printer HP LaserJet Professional MFP M130a only has working scanning function (simple scan with sane) if I install the proprietary hp-plugin.

I've tested this on Arch and Ubuntu and I'm only able to scan, if I install the plugin.

The problem is, I do not want to run proprietary software on my system.

That was the main reason why I decided to buy this HP printer, because exactly this model was listed as fully supported by the free hplip software. (https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index)

So I guess, there's no way of getting scanning to work without the plugin?

Are there maybe any other HP printers that (definitely!!) are able to scan without the plugin?

Thanks!

Hi,

HPLIP scan functionality only works if HP proprietary plugins are installed.
Please install plugin in order to scan from HP LaserJet Professional MFP M130a.

Thanks,
shivani

Hi,

thank you very much for your answer!
I have to say though, the compatibility table is quite misleading then, since it clearly says for this device:

'driver plugin needed: no'

'support level: full'

'Scan supported means that PC initiated scan using a SANE compatible software application is supported over parallel, USB, or network (depending on I/O connection). Information on digital sending products is covered in note 9, below.'

I'm going to have to find a different solution for this and probably will return this device.

But thanks for your help, I appreciate that HP tries to offer free software solutions to the customer.
