Can't find printer once ran the hplip download on Ubunut 18.04

Asked by Lori Carnahan on 2019-04-11

HPLIP cannot detect printers in your network.
This may be due to existing firewall settings blocking the required ports. When you are in a trusted network environment, you may open the ports for network services like mdns and slp in the firewall. For detailed steps follow the link. http://hplipopensource.com/node/375

I have checked and my firewalls are disabled.

I am trying to hook my new printer up via a USB connection and I don't have a wireless card on my printer.

Hi,

Any word about my problem? Need to decide if I'm keeping the printer or not.

Thank you

I can now get to the device discovery page with the usb. when I hit next it tells me my printer doesn't exist. I have left the usb unplugged for the entire install and made sure the printer itself isn't in sleep mode. But it still isn't happening.

" I have left the usb unplugged "
How do you think that the computer can communicate with the printer if it is not connected?

For the warning about the canberra-module (which should not block anything), try the command
sudo apt install libcanberra-gtk-module libcanberra-gtk3-module

Which output do you receive for the command
hp-check -t

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #7

The loader tells you when to plug in the printer. Or replug it in as the case may be. Even after I do that, the computer still can't find the printer.

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #8

when I type in hp-check-t or hp-check -t I am getting commend not found.

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #9

after doing the carberra de you mentioned above and trying the install again with the printer plugged into the usb port the entire time I am still getting this error:

Gtk-Message: 11:52:39.018: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)
error: No devices found on bus: usb

You said it shouldn't matter. So I'm just presenting as the only error I am getting.

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #10

ok. did the hp-check -t under downloads, here's what I got::

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

What model is the printer?
The system does not show any trace of a HP printer on the USB ports.

Do you have the chance to try with a different cable?

For diagnostic purposes do the following:
If the printer is plugged in, unplug it and wait half a minute.
The plug the usb cable with the printer into the PC and wait half a minute again.
Finally issue the command

dmesg | tail

What output do you receive?

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #14

Color Laser Jet Pro MFP Mnw Is the printer. Going to try a different cable now.

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #15

New cable didn't help. Trying diagnostics as directed.

These messages probably indicate a general problem on your system.
I have no idea what the cause is for that.
The error messages mention libQtCore.so.4.8.7, so maybe you should try reinstalling the package libqtcore4

Lori Carnahan (loricarnahan) said : #18

THank you for your time. Not a programmer so no idea how to try what you suggested. I'll have to go back to Windows...lol. That I know how to get to work with my new printer. Thank you again for your time.

Can you help with this problem?
