suddenly all pages pring blue...

Asked by Rogier van Vlissingen on 2019-02-22

Since a few days my pages are printing blue.
when printing test pages from the printer, printing is normal, but from the computer, all pages print out with a cyan background.
I cannot discover any setting.
The only thing I can think of is to uninstall and reinstall the printer, which I have not done yet.

I've tried it both from a pdf or from a wordprocessing document - same result. So there has to be some setting in HPLIP or something ...

In short, recreating the problem is by printing anything from the computer.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

OK well, I sort of gave up.

I uninstalled HPLIP 18.6 and installed HPLIP 19.1

Now, I have a new problem - no more blue background, but it is printing greyscale only.

I ran the diagonstics on HPLIP and this is what I get:

(Note it does not seem to read the PPD file right...)

Probably bug #1817308

It seems ghostscript 9.26 solved this problem for some...

however, I am still stuck where after installing HPLIP 3.19.1 I am now printing only in grayscale, and no longer in color.

Diagnostics keep showing this item, which I tend to believe is the one that indicates the problem, but I am clueless what to do about it.

For diagnostic purposes of the ppd access problem:
What is the output of the commands

groups
sudo ls -l /etc/cups/ppd/HP_Officejet_Pro_8630.ppd

rogier@123456 ~ $ groups
rogier adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare vboxusers
rogier@123456 ~ $
+++

and

rogier@123456 ~ $ sudo ls -l /etc/cups/ppd/HP_Officejet_Pro_8630.ppd
[sudo] password for rogier:
-rw-r----- 1 root lp 27924 Feb 22 10:47 /etc/cups/ppd/HP_Officejet_Pro_8630.ppd
rogier@123456 ~ $

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said : #7

Your user is member of the group lpadmin (line printer admins), but not member of the group lp (line printer users).

Issue the command

sudo usermod -a -G lp rogier

and then logoff and log on again. This should allow access to the ppd file.

Thanks. I did that. still not resolved... now I get this:

seems the operative issues may be, I should take out this old ppd:

-----------------------

but I am not sure how to do that.

and then this:

warning: 2 queues of same device HP_Officejet_Pro_8630 is configured.

In ahy case, the result is, I am still printing grayscale, even with the test page launched from HPLIP. So the cause seems to be in the driver config and not in an app.

Please check the settings in the print dialogue, especially whether you have selected 'greyscale only'.

nope, I've definitely selected color and it keeps printing grayscale, plus an extra page.

even more annoying, I am printing an eventbrite ticket from the web... and it prints in color just fine. but if I print from my computer, I still get grayscale.

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said : #14

Somewhere in the printer definition the "print grayscale" setting must have been selected.
Sorry, but I do not know where you have to look to find it.

Have you checked cups http://localhost:631/ ?

Thanks. I tried that link, but nothing comes up... intuitively it sounds like you are looking in the right direction, but I can't get anywhere with CUPS. I had to install CUPS. Cannot find an option for color vs grayscale printing... feeling dumb, still stuck ;-)

Well, eventually this got solved by doing nothing. My hunch is all these steps were necessary... somehow or other. The effect just took a little longer...
