plugin installation fails - error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed - hp-check says all ok - SuSe Leap 42.1

Asked by Michael Nagler

Hello,

When I use hp-plugin, it quits with an error:
error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed
error: Plug-in install failed.

This prevents me from using the scanner-function of the LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdn. What can I do?

What I did:
I use a LaserJet 1010 for some time, now I got a LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdn.
I downloaded HPLIP 3.19.1 for Suse from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip
and it installed it flawlessly. Printing is ok.

When using skanlite, I was instructed to run hp-plugin first, which I did, creating the above mentioned error.

hp-doctor, said phyton-notify was missing, but was not able to install it. I installed it with Yast.
Now hp-check shows no errors or warnings any more (is it ok to copy-paste it at the end?)

I have python2.7 and python3.4 installed.
Among the installed packets, I can find these:
dbus-1-python
dbus-1-python3
python-gobject
python-gobject2
python-gobject3
so that does not look to bad to me.

I have not much of an idea any more. When I ran hp-setup, he asked to replace the ppd-file for the LJ1010. Afterwards this printer does not work any more ("Filter Fails"), printer output says:
PCL XL error
subsystem: Kernel
Error: Illegal Tag
Operator: 0x1b
Position: 8
but that is probably a different problem

openSuse Leap 42.1

Thank you for your help!

 Michael

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

It did work when I downloaded the plugin "hplip-3.19.1-plugin.run" file from the below path and used "sh hplip-3.19.1-plugin.run" command instead of running hp-plugin. For whatever reason.
