HP_LaserJet_MFP_M28 Scanner does not work

Asked by Jarno

HP_LaserJet_MFP M28A Ubuntu 18.10
Initially hplip 3.18.7 installed printer works but scanner not
I Uninstalled 3.18.7 and installed hplip 3.18.12 + plugin 3.18.12

Printer still working
Scanner begin to scan and stop with error

I launched utility hp-scan -g
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.18.12)
Scan Utility ver. 2.2
.......
Setting output format to PNG for greyscale mode.
warning: Defaulting to '/home/jarno/hpscan001.png'.
Warming up...
Scanning...
error: SANE: Error during device I/O (code=9)
Closing device.

simple-scan -d ends with:
 DEBUG: scanner.vala:1217: sane_start (page=0, pass=0) -> SANE_STATUS_IO_ERROR
[+22,69s] WARNING: scanner.vala:1224: Unable to start device: Error during device I/O
[+23,01s] DEBUG: scanner.vala:768: sane_cancel ()
[+23,01s] DEBUG: scanner.vala:771: sane_close ()

If i try download and install from HP i get
Plug-in version: 3.18.12
Installed HPLIP version: 3.18.12
Number of files to install: 55
Plugin installation failed
error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed
error: Plug-in install failed.Done.

so i installed it in local
sh hplip-3.18.12-plugin.run
Plug-in version: 3.18.12
Installed HPLIP version: 3.18.12
Number of files to install: 55
Done.
I expect it is correctly installed

Some information on the different tests

HP LASERJET PRO MFP M28A
Firmware Datecode 20180809
in all environments the printer works well but the scanner is failing
Locally make a copy ( scanner to print) works well

Physical machine1 Ubuntu 18.10 HPLIP 3.18.12
Physical machine2 Ubuntu 18.10 HPLIP 3.18.12

Virtualbox Debian 9.7 stretch HPLIP 3.18.12
Virtualbox Opensuse 20190124 HPLIP 3.18.6

So the only common element is « HPLIP »

did anyone manage to run this product with hplip?

Can HP certify that the tests were done with hplip 3.18.12?
The product M28a looks interesting but only with windows ....

On developers.hp.com it says that M28a doesn't need a plugin (hplip-3.18.12-plugin)
but each time i tried to use scanner without plugin i got a message to install the plugin.
What is false ?
So I installed the plugin , scanner begin to scan and failed with in finally with i/o error 9 but but it seems to be consistent with the error http 503.

I have registred my product on hp site for assistance

Covered by manufacturer's warranty, 13 months remaining

   BUT

This product is no longer supported by HP. You can search for possible solutions on this support website.

So I do not recommend buying this printer , not supported by HP and no answer from hplip
