Can't set up my OfficeJet 8710 using usb cord; don't want wireless.

Asked by Raymond Hubbard

I'm trying to install/set up my new OfficeJet 8710 into my tower running Linux Mint 17.3 (sorry I'm so far behind), connected by usb cord/cable (I don't want it running wirelessly). Also I haven't been able to upgrade my existing Device Manager from 3.18.5 to 3.18.12 (clicking on the hplip-3.18.12.run file yields this error message:
"The file /home/laura-gale/Downloads/hplip-3.18.12.run was opened with UTF-8 encoding but contained invalid characters.
It is set to read-only mode, as saving might destroy its content.
Either reopen the file with the correct encoding chosen or enable the read-write mode again in the menu to be able to edit it." And it didn't download the accompanying hplip 3.18.12 folder.

Further, I believe made a touching mistake when setting up the unit's set-up procedure, and I don't know how to reset it (start over).

Obviously, I need what appears to be considerable help. Please help.

Regards,
Ray

Hello, all,

The printer's digital display didn't need to be reset; it was fine. LM 17.3 found the printer, and it's printing fine. And the HP Device Manager sees it. All is well.
