Can't scan in Ubuntu 18.10

Asked by Keith Bates

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 18.10 from 18.04 last week I am unable to scan. I have used the Ubuntu version, then removed it and downloaded the version from hplip web-site.

I can currently print but not scan. Simple scan says "failed to connect". Xsane has "Failed to open device hpaio:/usb/ HP_LaserJet_Professional_M1212nf....." Error during device I/O

Output of hp-check -t below

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Ubuntu 18.10 support is yet to be added in the hplip driver and hence you are seeing this issue. Please use Ubuntu 18.04 for the scan functionality to work fine. Ubuntu 18.10 support will be added in the hplip driver in the future releases.
