HP LaserJet Firmware update with HPLIP / hp-firmware

I wasn't able to update the firmware of my HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdn with HPLIP or hp-firmware. It only works with M477_M377_MFP_Series_FW_Update_20180201.exe (Windows).

Now I read on Launchpad(question 21850) "To update the firmware on HP printers you'll need to use a windows system. The hp-firmware utility is specifically for laserjets that don't come with the firmware already installed."

The posting is from 2008 and therefore I wanted to ask whether this is still true.
