HP Laserjet P1102w not printing on Ubuntu 18.04 with HPLIP 3.18.9

Asked by FK

Hi,

I installed Ubuntu 18.04, and then installed HPLIP 3.18.9 on two machines. Both machines have CUPS 2.2.7 installed on them.
When I connect the HP Laserjet P1102w to the machines via USB it shows up in the HPLIP interface and in CUPS.
Everything looks fine and good.
hp-check also doesn't list any errors.
When I send a print job to the printer through any application, nothing gets printed and I get the message "Printing Stopped".

Any idea what the problem might be and how it could be resolved?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

When I start Ubuntu, I get an error message dialog box:
HPLIP Status Service
No system tray detected on this system
Unable to start, exiting

Could it be that this is causing the problem?

Exact same problem. A day ago while I was checking the HP device manager there was a log showing error code 1018 but now that seems to have vanished but the printer is not at all printing. One more thing after running the hp-setup while the printer was getting detected and installed the ubuntu software center gave a brief notification that additional drivers are required but when I clicked the notification the ubuntu software center was not able to find any additional drivers. I am a noob in linux so if you need any logs or anything to troubleshoot the issue please tell me I will share.

Good to know that FK is not the only person on this planet who has this problem.
Sk is also dealing with the same problem.
Well, maybe let me share my hp-check log report, maybe this helps the gurus (dispellers of darkness) of printing.
Thank you Sk, and thank you anybody else who can bring about light on this topic.
Not really a vital problem for me, because I have a second printer (Canon) which is working very well.

Lucky you have another printer but I am going back to MATE. First will try MATE 18.04 if it works then ok else will go back to MATE 16.04 which was working fine with my printer. Printer is quite essential for me and without any resolution I am a sitting duck. Well if a solution comes by then will think of switching to Ubuntu 18.04

Hi Sk,

Well, the whole thing was working very well on Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04.
Seems to be a new bug introduced in Ubuntu 18.04.
Let us see when it gets resolved.
I won't be going back to the older versions of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 18.04 has solved 10 old problems for me and brought this 1 new problem.
And I am in no hurry because I have a second printer which is working, sorry to hear that you don't have one.
Let us hope that the problem can be solved soon, Ubuntu 18.04 is a beautiful operating system.
Anyhow, thank you for sharing your insights concerning this problem,
May the forces of life be with you, my dear friend

Hi,
The problem seems to be with ghostscript. Can you try the solution mentioned in below link and let know if it fixes the problem?
https://askubuntu.com/questions/924915/broken-ghostscript-configuration

Suggested solution as oer the forum:
sudo rmdir /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/iccprofiles
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgs9-common

Hi srinivas,

Unfortunately the command
sudo rmdir /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/iccprofiles
leads to the following error message:
failed to remove '/usr/share/ghostscript/9.25~iccprofiles': No such file or directory
and invoking the command
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgs9-common
doesn't have any effect.
I am still getting the HPLIP error message dialog box when I start the system and I still can't print.

Thank you for your help.

@FK:
Are you sure that you did not mistype the command?
The system tells that it cannot find ...9.25~iccprofiles, but the file name should be ...9.25/iccprofiles

Hi Manfred,

Sorry for confusing you by sending the wrong error message.

There is no folder called /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/iccprofiles
But, there is a folder called /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/~iccprofiles

which I then tried to delete when I invoked the command:
sudo rmdir /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25~iccprofiles
which led to the error message:
'/usr/share/ghostscript/9.25~iccprofiles': No such file or directory

I then deleted the folder using Midnight Commander.
Midnight Commander got rid of that folder.

Then I ran the command:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgs9-common
Invoking this command led to the following output:

Reading package lists... Done

Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.

The above command recreated the /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/~iccprofiles folder once again.

Then I tried printing, without any success.
Then I restarted the the machine, and tried printing once again, without any success.

I hope that this makes things a bit clearer.

Thank you for your help.

That is strange. There should be a file (in fact a link) named /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/iccprofiles, but no file or folder named /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/~iccprofiles

What is the output of the command

ls -l /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/

Hi Manfred,

The output of the command
ls -l /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/

Hi Manfred,

And this is the content which is shown when I
ls
the folder or the link.
Please forgive me for not knowing the difference between a folder and a link.

ls
default_cmyk.icc gray_to_k.icc ps_cmyk.icc sgray.icc
default_gray.icc iccprofiles ps_gray.icc srgb.icc
default_rgb.icc lab.icc ps_rgb.icc

Hi,

Can you please install HPLIP 3.18.6 driver from the below link and let us know the behavior.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/
Also do install the corresponding plugin using hp-plugin command.

Thanks,
Srinivas Teja.

Hi srinivas,

I installed the HPLIP 3.18.6 driver and then installed the corresponding plugin as described in your previous post.

The HPLIP Status Service error message still comes up after starting the machine, but nevertheless the printer is working very well now.

Thank you very much for your help and have a very nice day, my dear GURU.

Hi Sk,

By mistake, I somehow unsubscribed you from this post.
I am not a launchpad expert, so please forgive me.
I have resubscribed you once again, so that you can also solve the problem.
Thanks to srinivas the problem has been solved.
And, Manfred and you also helped me a lot in understanding and solving the problem.

Thank you, srivinas, Manfred and Sk, for taking the time and helping me.
May the forces of life be with you all for the rest of time, time which has no beginning and no ending.

Its okay mate. Shit happens! But I really appreciate you taking time to re-subscribe me to help me get over a problem Thank you again. Glad to know that the problem has been solved but I am thinking of trying Elementary OS first and then may be go on to Ubuntu but honestly Ubuntu MATE 16.04 is really good and quite light and is getting the work done. Overall after being on Windows for the past 15 years switching to Linux has been possible and quite a walk in the park without any knowledge of coding languages all because of you beautiful people and thanks for that. I feel free from being a slave of updates and monopoly over bug fixes by proprietary OSs. A big thanks to all the participants of this thread who have selflessly taken the pain to kill the bug..haha..and also the Linux community.

Love...Nadim (Sk).

Hi Sk,

Thank you for forgiving me.
I left Windows some 15 years ago, and have been using Linux since then, and I will never go back to Windows or Mac ever again.
I am not an operating systems guy, but then one needs operating systems in order to get work done.
You know, you, me and the other people who have contributed in the resolution of this problem make the world, we are the world.

Use whatever operating system you think is the best for you.
I have been using Ubunt for many years now, and it has worked very well for me.
Freedom is the beauty of Linux, no matter which flavour.
Linux has very helpful community members, and is a great operating system, that is the beauty of it.

Anyhow, my dear friend, a beautiful song for you.
An old video, but nevertheless still very beautiful music.

Take care, my friend, and have a very nice day.
