HPLIP is installed but I cannot install OfficeJet 6700

Asked by Kev

I have installed HPLIP from the Mint (18.3) repositories. The installed HPLIP version is 3.16.3.

I want to install and use an OfficeJet 6700 Premium.

When I run any of the hp- utilities, I get Python errors. Example:

hp-info
Traceback (most recent call last):
  ...
ImportError: /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/hpmudext.cpython-35m-x86_64-linux-gnu.so: undefined symbol: hpmud_make_par_uri

If I try to install the printer via the GUI, I get this error:

Missing driver

Printer 'HP-Officejet-6700' requires the '/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups' program but it is not currently installed. Please install it before using the printer.

I get the same error regardless of whether I choose "duplexer installed" or not, and regardless of whether I choose "IPP network printer via DNS-SD" or "AppSocket/HP JetDirect" for my Connection.

Any advice welcome.
