My printer will not connect to the wi-fi modem

Asked by Daniel D. Bremer

My distribution is SuSE Tumbleweed. The printer is an HP Officejet Pro 8100. I set it up successfully about a month ago to run on a wireless basis. In the last week it stopped communicating with the computer. I deleted the printer and reinstalled it several times. It will work until I reboot the computer. I get the message "device communication error" and error code 5012. I have a detailed hp-check.log file that I can email if you will give me an address.

Here are the files. I have unzipped the files that were compressed. The
printer works fine as long as the USB cord is attached. It does not work
with the wireless feature.

I have solved the problem by reinstalling Linux. I reinstalled because the
system was locking up. I had originally installed SuSE Leap 15.0 but at
some point, probably from installing some iupdates, it was changed to SuSE
Tumbleweed. I think that is what caused the problem because Tumbleweed is
intended to be cutting edge so it is not very stable. Something was
clashing with HPLIP. I will watch the updates to make sure that i do not
mistakenly install Tumbleweed.

I solved the problem by reinstalling SuSE Leap 15.0. I did this because I was having other problems as well such as crashing. There must have been some clash between HPLIP and other applications, perhaps trying to reach the wireless modem at the same time. I had originally installed Leap 15.0 but somehow it became Tumbleweed after some updates. Tumbleweed is supposed to be cutting edge and I suppose less stable. I will try to make sure I don't get moved to Tumbleweed again.
