HP MFP M181fw scanner installation problem

I have bought a Color LaserJet Pro HP MFP M181fw The printer works, the scanner is not found,

I'm on XUbuntu, 18.04. Installed with hplip-3.18.6.run, it seemed unproblematic. Printer works fine. The scanner is not found by xsane.

lsusb shows the usb connection,

sane-find-scanner found the scanner:

scanimage -L did not find anything:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

sudoing it makes no difference.

I have already added a line

ATTRS{idVendor}=="03f0", ATTRS{idProduct}=="af2a", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

to /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane1.rules and restarted, this has not changed anything.

The HP device manager works, but if I press scan, it starts with some error "Failed to create file: Permission denied", then xsane tries to find a scanner, but fails: "Failed to open device hpaio:/usb/HP_ColorLaserJet_MFP_M178-M181?serial=VNC4G14125: Operation not supported

Looks like plug-in is not installed properly.

Could you please run "hp-plugin" command. It will download and install plug-in automatically.

If this printer, as you say, requires a binary plugin, then https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index should be amended to indicate it, because it currently says "no", possibly misleading potential customers (like me, although I was wise enough to double-check here).

This is true of other printers, too. That page should either be kept updated or removed.
