Installation problem for HP Laserjet 6L on Xubuntu 6.06

Asked by jdiddy

Hi all...I'm trying to get this old and glorious beast running again. It works with Ubuntu 8.10 but was remarkably slow.

When I try to install hplip, everything works fine, even after re-boot (parallel port) but it will not print the test page. It does recognize the Laserjet 6L printer, though.

If I try to run hp-toolbox -g it says that it it's unable to load Qt4 support. I really don't know what that means. Any help is appreciated.

The HP LaserJet 6L is supported by HPLIP, however support that is provided is considered "as-is". You can get more information about this device here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_6l.html

Although the printer should work we are no longer testing on it and can't say for sure if that is still the case. Also X/Ubuntu 6.06 is old as well. There could be some complications in the age that might be causing problems. You could try Ubuntu 8.04?

You can run hp-check -t and look for any errors.

Also you can look at this document for some possible help on troubleshooting parallel:

Hope this helps and sorry for the inconvenience.

I ended up installing Xubuntu 8.04 on the system and everything works great. I'm happy to get more mileage out of the old computer and printer, so thanks for all of your help!
