hp deskjet f4280 not working

Asked by CamiKay

I don't know what an effing ubuntu is, or a red hat or any of that other stuff that you guys are talking about.
All I know is that I have an eeepc 701sd with linux, I just bought myself a beautiful new hp deskjet f4280 printer, and they're not cooperating with eachother.
The fact that I bought the eeepc in taiwan so some of the instructions/wizard stuff is in chinese, which I can't read, doesn't help.
Anyways, I've tried to download hplip, which seems to be what I need, but can't get it run because it doesn't save to the desktop (do I even have a desktop? really now) and I don't know what the heck a terminal is or how to get this .run file to run.

Anyways, there goes an hour of my life that I will never get back.
Please help me.
god I'm so frustrated.

Okay I guess I should include;
The installer wizard thingy starts when I plug the printer in. It's all in chinese, but I just push the button that has an n on it cause I assume that means next.
It seems to know what kind of printer it is:
HP_Deskjet_F4200_series
so I hit the next button again.
but then it says
hp
deskjet f4100 (NOT 4200 or 4280)
foomatic +hpijs

Is this foomatic hpijs thing an older version of the hplip thing?

anyways I hit next
It then asks me a question in Chinese. I've tried answering yes and no. neither produces much in the way of results.
When I hit yes, it shows that it is trying to print a test page, but my printer just sits there idly, seeming to enjoy the fact that it is a 2000 new taiwan dollar paperweight.

When I try to print a document, nothing happens.
When I look under settings and printers, it shows that it recognizes the printer.
but still, no actual printed pages of paper are emerging from my printer.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I found this page:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/eeepc.html
and this page:
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/addingxandrosrepos
which terrify me.
Should I just take this printer back?

The install process for the Eee PC can seem a little scary for new users. I'm going to install the EeePC and go through the instructions again to see if I can make them a little more friendly.

However the main problems are that the Asus Eee PC repo's do not include the required packages to install HPLIP. The page:

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/addingxandrosrepos

Does have a lot of warnings but i haven't heard of any EeePC user complain of any issues when following the directions. I'd be happy to go through the steps with you to get HPLIP installed if you'd like.

Wow! That would be awesome! Thanks for writing back- I was about ready to take the printer back, which can be quite a process since I don't speak Chinese and the guys at the store might need an explanation.
I did the control alt T thing and opened a black terminal box thingy. I put in the first thing
sudo kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
and got the 'deb' list thing, but quit there without adding anything because I'd prefer not to go on without help.
I'm a little confused because it says to copy and paste the 4 lines that start with 'deb' but there are 6 lines that start with deb. Anyways, I'll wait for more instructions.
Thanks a million, it's great to know there's help out there. I'm stoked on this printer and really want it to work!

Hey Aaron,
Would you still be happy to go through the steps with me?
Cause I'd still love to get this thing installed.
My eeePC only has 601 mb free space, will it still be okay?
Please let me know when you'd be available or by what means we could go through the steps.
Thanks
Cami
