Ubuntu : cannot remove HP icon in the SysTray

Asked by winux

Hi

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 almost released (tomorrow).
I cannot get rid of this non useful icon despite I went to:
Applications > HPLIP toolbox > and went in the right tab to ask for "never display"
But no change, even after reboot !!

Hi winux,

You can kill the hp-systray or hp icon by killing the process manually.
steps:
1)Find the process id using the command -> ps aux | grep hp-systray (or) ps aux | grep hp-toolbox.
2)The output of the above command will show the processes running and its corresponding process id of hp-systray or hp-toolbox if it is running.
3)kill the process using the command -> sudo kill -9 pid(process id).

Thanks

Hi Pranavateja
Thx for your answer

Actually, I've got 1 reply with one command
and 4 with the other one, all different
Do you have any idea what process I should take away?
and why so many answers?

gerard@PC4:~$ ps aux | grep hp-toolbox
gerard 4074 0.0 0.0 14376 1108 pts/0 S+ 15:40 0:00 grep --color=auto hp-toolbox

gerard@PC4:~$ ps aux | grep hp-systray
gerard 1648 0.0 1.6 754276 67300 ? Ssl 14:34 0:00 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/hp-systray -x
gerard 1695 0.0 0.6 260096 24760 ? Sl 14:34 0:00 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/hp-systray -x
gerard 1696 0.0 0.4 152444 16636 ? S 14:34 0:00 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/hp-systray -x
gerard 4077 0.0 0.0 14376 1104 pts/0 S+ 15:40 0:00 grep --color=auto hp-systray

Have a nice day, Thx

OK Thx Pranavateja

It worked BUT just for the present session.
When I reboot HP logo is still there and completely useless
. no action if I left or right click.
However, I think it's a bug because

Applications > HPLIP tools > menu configure > preferences > system tray icon tab
I ticked "always hide"
BUT no action

Looks like a bug doesn'it?

Hi winux,

Ubuntu comes with a default hplip version, maybe this is a bug from ubuntu version you are using since it is a beta version. You can try the same with stable version once it is released.

Thanks

Hello Pranavateja

Well I'm on 18.04 that's true, but normally it's released today (2018-04-26) so a stable version isn't it ?
Anyway it's a bug for sure but not blocking. Maybe will be fixed ... one day!

Thx for yout time
Have a nice day
