Hi,

The printer can be added in the http://localhost:631 and select the "Set Default Options" from the list box and set the Color Mode to Grayscale and save it. This will print the jobs in Mono mode.

Thanks,
Sujay

there is no color mode / grayscale settings in cups. under the color tab:
text neutral grays: black only
graphics neutral grays: black only
photo neutral grays: black only
print color as gray: On

i can not find any specific setting for grayscale.

i still have a setting for a oj 6450 inkjet. it has an option for Output Mode: color/grayscale/hi quality grayscale.
the m477 has no such option.

Hi,

The parameters for each printer may vary. Go ahead with gray to print the job in Mono only.

Alternatively the default color for CUPS can be even configured by running lpoptions command in the terminal.
Verify the color modes the printer supports by running the command which lists out the color the printer supports.

lpoptions -l | grep Color

Then set the color by running the following command in the terminal.

lpoptions -o ColorModel=Gray

This will set the default color for CUPS.

Thanks,
Sujay

i have two printers defined in cups. m477 and m477mono. the m477mono has all the gray options set and it still prints color.

the printers.conf file:
<Printer m477mono>

</Printer>

this leads me to believe that the color mode option should be available. but from everything i read, the availability of this option is based on the hplip driver.

i had another thought. can i define the printer model for m477mono as something other than mfp m477 that would force it to print black and white? (a trick i used to use with windows.)

is there anyone from the hplip team that can answer? i guess this could be a "design feature". or am i asking of the wrong team?

thanks!

i may have found a work around.

created a new printer,
selected AppSocket/HP JetDirect,
unchecked the Color Management option,
selected as the Model:
       HP LaserJet 4000 Series pcl3, hpcups 3.17.11

so far, this is printing mono sheets.

Can you help with this problem?
