CentOS 5.3 - problem upgrading to the latest HPLIP version

Asked by mahou

Hi,

I am newbie to Linux, and would like to learn it. I installed CentOS 5.3 and trying to get HPLIP working.
The default version that come with CentOS is 1.6.7 .. so, I'd like to upgrade it.
I have my printers hooked up on network, they are HP LaserJet 1522nf and HP Color Laser 2550n.

My questions are:
1.) Where and how do I download or enable the error messages I posted on the bottom?
2.) If I got those dependencies enable or install, will work?
3.) Do I have to download the PPD file seperately? It doesn't seem like the PPD file for LaserJet 1522nf is in my database.

4.) would someone please help me to get it working?

Thanks in Advance.

I followed the instruction here:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/centos.html

and able to get to Step 3. On Step 4.
I used the Automatic Installer Method which I follow here.
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

I was able to get through to Step 10 on this page. However, It won't detect my printers, and there are a lot of "Optional Dependencies" were ignored during these progress automatically.

I got these "error" messages during the Auto installer stage.

You will need to upgrade to use the printers you have--as you probably know.

Installing HPLIP (or anything much for that matter..) is rather more difficult on CentOS/RHEL.

The automatic installer does not support CentOS, however we do have manual install instructions here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/centos.html

It's great you want to learn Linux! As a personal recommendation you may want to start with say, Ubuntu or Fedora, and then move on as you feel you want to learn something new. The communities for these distros are very active and lots of people would love to help. CentOS is more of an Enterprise distro and can be more challenging for someone starting out. IMV.

Hope this helps.

Hi Aaron,

Thank you very much for your help.

I will give it a try. One of the reason why I use CentOS is that Ubuntu can't install in my old P3 system.
Correction, it install, but it wouldn't boot. It gave me Error 18 when I boot up, and CentOS install and boot perfect.

Thanks again.

Best,

mahou
