new HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, no scanner detected

Asked by Beth Button

We have a Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit system, hplip version is 3.17.11
We purchased a new HP printer to replace our older model HP printer as we have always had no problems using HP products with our linux system. With the OfficeJet Pro 8710, we can print with no problems, but have been unable to scan. When xsane is selected, it searches and finds no devices. Did 'hp-check -t' and amongst other things came up with an error: unsupported model:HP_OfficeJet_Pro-8710. Is this the problem? Is it really not supported? Also, when 'sudo hp-setup' is run, this is received: error: HPLIP is not installed properly or is installed without graphicalsupport. Please reinstall HPLIP (which I did...no luck.)
warning: Qt/PyQt 4 initialization failed.
error: hp-setup requires GUI support (try running with --qt3). Also, try using interactive (-i) mode.

Any assistance in getting the computer to locate and utilize the scanner would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
