Having trouble with LaserJet 1300 duplex printing.

Asked by spud1207

Hi,
I'm running OpenSuse 11.0, HPLIP 3.9.2.49 [Device Manager 15.0 (Qt4)] and CUPS 1.3.7.
I have an HP LaserJet 1300 (USB) printer and I'm having trouble with duplex printing.
The duplex options in the print dialogs are active, but the printer won't pause (LED
on the front of the printer) to remove/reinsert the paper in the tray.

The HPLIP device manager and CUPS have settings for duplex (long/short side).
The duplex options are visible to the applications I use, OpenOffice Writer/Calc and
KPDF, but they don't have any effect on the printed pages.

I think I have HPLIP and CUPS configured correctly, but nothing I've tried has
been successful. I know that I can print two sided by issuing two print jobs (odd
and even pages) but I'd like to get this working properly.

thanks in advance,
spud1207

Everything looks okay. If you go to cups what's the duplex set to?

http://localhost:631/printers

Click set printer options.

I'm not clear what you mean the printer doesn't pause, it continues to always print single sided?

Thanks.

Hi Aaron,

> Everything looks okay.
Thanks for verifying the installation.

> If you go to cups what's the duplex set to?
CUPS is configured to "Double-Sided Printing: Long Edge (Standard)".

> I'm not clear what you mean the printer doesn't pause,
> it continues to always print single sided?
Correct, it prints out the job just like it was submitted as a
"single sided" job.

My only working reference is when I tested the printer from a
Windows XP host. In that setting, the printer will print the odd
pages, set the amber alert light on the front of the printer, and
then the user (me) has to take all the paper out of the tray and
reinsert the pages that were just printed. When the paper is
re-inserted, the printer will automatically startup (i.e. feed the paper)
and complete the job.

Thank you for all your help so far. If there is any other information
that I can provide, please let me know.

Sincerely,
spud1207

This device only supports manual duplex. HPLIP does not have an automated manual duplex process. For information on manual duplex printing you can go here:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/99

Hope this helps.

I understand your answer, but I don't really like it. Are you saying that
HPLIP doesn't support any printer that does manual page flipping, but
is advertised as supporting duplex printing?

I suggest that this feature be submitted as an enhancement request
since it is supported by HP in the drivers they supply for Windows.

As for Linux, there are several print dialog boxes that don't have an
option to print all odd/even pages. Printing to a PS/PDF file and then
submitting two jobs to get the duplex effect is a three step job,
and it should be just one. Sorry, I'm just venting. :-)

thanks again for your effort,
spud1207

Thank you for all your efforts. Please count my vote towards supporting
the "manual duplex" feature.
