Intermittent 5012 error with HP Officjet Pro 8600

I've been getting intermittent connectivity problems when using HPLIP (Unable to communicate with device (code=12)). I've installed the latest version 3.17.11 but it's still happening. When it works it prints and scans fine but there is a lot of faffing about when the 5012 errors occur. Any advice on trying to track down what the problem could be and making it more stable?
