installing HP Deskjet 3775 results in error message "no devices found" on hp toolbox

I'm trying to install an HP DeskJet Ink advantage 3775 via the HPLIP toolbox. It's plugged into the power outlet and the usb port, yet the installer says that no device is connected when using the HP device manager window. The printer works fine and was installed on windows without any problems at all, and it can print wirelessly using my iPad. It's only when I try to install it on my laptop that runs linux mint cinnamon that it can't be detected. I'm an absolute linux newbie and I can't find anything that works in the linux forums.
