colour printing black is dusting

Asked by Mervyn Mitchell

I am using Linux Mint 18,2 to print colour on an HP Envy 5542 - the OS is upto date
I have been using this printer for several months with no problems
Up until last week I was having no difficulties in printing photos on Other glossy Inkjet Printer Paper with Best Quality settings.
This week The Black print is 'dusting' and is not drying resulting in the prints not being usable as the black comes off.
I have changed the paper and installed new HP printer cartridges although the originals were not depleted.
I have updated the HPLIP to the current CUPS 3.17.11.
The results are all similar - black dusting. The rest of the colours hold good - the black comes off the colour printed underneath
I have run the hp-check test regime and all the results are good OK (end part extract below)
I have used other printer and quality settings with similar results as well

I now have a stack of useless glossy paper and two part used 62 XL cartridges.

What do you advise

Hi Mervyn,

This seems more like a hardware issue. Please check once and let me know.

Thanks,
Afshan

Hi Afshan
I have carried out all the recommended tests and cleansing routines for the printer.
I have bought new HP Professional Inkjet paper.
I have also changed the printer settings to HP.
The prints still 'dust' on black.
BUT not quite so much.
Needless to say the printer is out of warranty so HP support is minimal.
None of the FAQ or HP guides and questions appear to have had this problem

Is there a printer setting that uses very little black toner and still looks good print?

At the moment I have spent more money and wasted more time than buying a replacement printer so my options are diminishing rapidly.
I had a similar problem with the previous Brother printer and they were equally unhelpful.

Oh well I we cannot resolve this, Photobox will get a bit more trade and I will just use this gold-plated brick for black and white work and at least I will save on HP colour cartridges and HP will get a little less trade
regards
Mervyn
