Unable to download binary plugin on 3.17.7

Asked by MRPockets

I am trying to setup my LaserJet 1018 printer but am unable to download the binary plugin either automatically or by running hp-plugin. I believe the problem is that http://hplipopensource.com/ has moved to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing. I have tried to install the latest HPLIP (3.17.10) but cannot as I am on Ubuntu 17.10 & libcrypto is not available to install. Is there anywhere I can download the binary plugin for HPLIP 3.17.7? It is not available at https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/.

I have the same printer (LaserJet 1018) and when i try to download the plugin (via hp-setup as sudoer), procedure return this error:

error: /home/myhome/.hplip/hplip-3.17.7-plugin.run file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered
error: Failed to install Plugin.
error: The device you are trying to setup requires a binary plug-in. Some functionalities may not work as expected without plug-ins. Please run 'hp-plugin' as normal user to install plug-ins.Visit http://hplipopensource.com for more infomation.

never changes if I run 'hp-plugin' as normal user.

Not Martin Wimpress,

The problem is not that I cannot install 3.17.10 (I honestly don't care which version I am using) but that I cannot download the binary plugin with the version in the repos (3.17.7). I only tried to install 3.17.10 because I thought it might be new enough to point to the new plugin location which 3.17.7 apparently does not (running hp-plugin shows that it tries to download from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin/hplip-3.17.7-plugin.run).

I still cannot get 3.17.7 to work but I did find a way to install 3.17.10 on Ubuntu 17.10 and it does download the plugin properly.

When just trying to use the .run file from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing, the installer complained that the requirement for libcrypto was not able to be met. I found that installing libssl-dev fulfills that requirement and 3.17.10 will install. I still don't know what is wrong with 3.17.7.

HPLIP 3.17.10 doesn't yet support Ubuntu 17.10. It would be supported in future releases
