Binary plugins with HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130nw

Asked by Francesco Turco

I just bought an HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130nw printer and installed it on my Gentoo Linux system. I managed to print some documents only after installing binary plugins. Are they really needed for this printer model? Before buying my printer I checked http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin.html, and I couldn't find it. My goal is to use a 100% free GNU/Linux system without proprietary software, so I would like to get rid of HP binary plugins if possible.

Edit: See also http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_mfp_m129-m134.html ("Requires firmware download: no")

Hi Francesco,

The printer requires plugin binaries for printing. You have to install the plugins to use this printer.

Thanks,

I think this should be reopened again, because after all, the requirement for a plugin is STILL not listed on the hplip website.

I was almost about to buy this printer, luckily I found this issue before I did. I realize Linux support comes after just about everything else for companies like HP, but at least, the basic information provided on the official site should be accurate. It's been two years.

Still unfixed as of today. I can't understand why, all you'd need is to change "No" to "Yes" on the site...
