How to auto-update plugin when hplip gets updated by the package manager?

How can I automatically update the binary plugin when hplip gets updated by the package manager of my os (dnf, apt-get, ...)?

The current situation is that my scanner/printer is never usable except when I'm around to fix it. Anytime someone else wants to use it, the plugin turns out to be outdated and they have to wait till I'm back to fix it.

 I simply want a printer that just keeps working (with open source drivers) even when my system gets updated. So far, that has been a major disappointment. Pragmatic solutions would be welcome. I don't care about legal aspects. Thanks!
