Printer Busy (1001) Status

HPLIP has been working fine, but after a system update something broke. When I tried to reinstall the USB connected, printer hplip could not see it. I tried multiple reinstalls of CUPS, drivers, HPLIP and PPD's.

Removing the mains cable and reiniserting it - meant that CUPS could see it and then I could install it using HPLIP.

However now it is installed it appears to have a permanent busy status (1001) and I can't print to it - again CUPS (print test page) seems unaffected). I tried a suggestion of a different USB port - no luck.

The HP connected Laserjet printer works fine and was untroubled by whatever happened.

Printer works fine from Windows 10 (dual boot machine) - same hardware, cables & location.
