dj840c prints rubbish instead of text, though initial test-page was OK

Asked by Danil

System: Ubuntu 8.10
Printer: HP DJ 840c
hp-check doesn't give any errors
hplip version 2.x initially, then upgraded to 3.9.2 (downloaded a run-file from site, installed in automatic mode, no errors)

After upgrading the test page looked OK (not mentioning that the color cartridge is empty, so I saw only black-ink printed lines and images).

Printing any text or even a regular test-page from the hplip gui gives out rubbish - as if the "printed image" was broken - there're lines, but they are filled randomly, not forming any symbols. Hard to explain. The closest description I can find - an image you can get on LCD screen when a phase regulation is wrong.

Any ideas?

It sounds like the printer heads or cartridges might be dirty or bad. Does the printer print correctly from a windows system?

You could run hp-check -t and verify there are no errors as well and that your printer is configured using the correct PPD file.

It's important to note that this device is supported by HPLIP, however any support is provided "as-is" and we aren't testing, providing technical assistance, or any code changes for this device.

You can get more information about this device here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet/deskjet_840c.html

Sorry for the inconvenience, although I hope this points you in the right direction.

It printed from Windows quite fine.
I ran hp-check, as I said - no errors

The main thing is that the test-page, during the HPLIP installation, was printed OK.
Yet after the installation (as well as before - with an older version) it prints rubbish...

The page you gave me says about a proprietary driver required for printing. Where can I get it?

Please post your entire hp-check and I'll do a quick look over it.

As I said above support is provided "as-is" because of the age of the device. But I'll look at your hp-check and make sure everything looks okay. :)

I'm not seeing any errors that might indicate the problem.

Although I don't see a printer queue configured for this device. Try running "sudo hp-setup" and then try printing.

Hope this helps.
