Can't start printer queue

Asked by NKL

Until two days ago I had no problem printing to my HP 2575 Photosmart printer. Then suddenly it asked me to upgrade HPILP to 3.17.7, which I did, and now the jobs go to the print queue but are held there and not started. I am running Fedora 26 and the printer is connected via a USB port. It (allegedly) does not share. So I reverted to 3.17.6, but the behaviour is exactly the same. Incidentally I still have no problem scanning a document to a file.

Computer hardware:
Processor Intel Core i3-3250 CPU @ 3.50 GHz, Memory 8Gb, Graphics Intel Ivybridge Desktop, Disk 227.7 Gb

Software: Fedora 26 x86_64, GNOME version 3.24.2

Looking at similar questions you always seem to want a copy of the results of 'hp-check -t'. So here it is:

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies

Thanks for the quick reply. Output below:

[<username.computername> ppd]$ sudo ls -l Photosmart_2570.ppd
-rw-r-----. 1 root lp 27981 Aug 8 20:30 Photosmart_2570.ppd

And what is the output of the command "groups"?
I assume that you are not member of the "lp" group. If that is the case, you should add the user to that group.

Here is the required output:

norman@Octopus ~]$ groups norman
norman : norman lp wheel

I think this shows that account "norman" (that's me - I'm the only user of this home computer) is a member of group "lp". However I have no idea whatever of what group "wheel" is.

What do you get for the command

head /etc/cups/ppd/Photosmart_2570.ppd

Thank you for your continued patience. In desperation I switched back to 3.17.7 again. Also I can't run the installation program (hplip-3.17.7.run) as a normal user. It fails at the first stage, extracting the files. so I have to sudo it, but get a warning from the software telling me I shouldn't! In order to do the installation at all I have to ignore this warning.

Below the output you requested:

norman@Octopus Downloads]$ head /etc/cups/ppd/Photosmart_2570.ppd

This is unexpected.

When running the hp-check script you received the error message
warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/Photosmart_2570.ppd ppd file
but now you can display its contents!

Please re-run the hp-check script to verify.

Mm. Ran hp-check again and it apparently read OK. Extract copy here

But still no change. Job goes to printer and is held there in print queue.

Problem Solved! thank you very much for all your efforts. You convinced me the software was Ok so there was only one other solution - get a new printer. I Another HP, of course! And itinstalled itself and started to work perfectly!

Sorry for all the trouble I sent you to. I suppose printers aren't immortal and I have had this one a number of years.
